The emergence of university rankings: a historical‑sociological account

Abstract Nowadays, university rankings are a familiar phenomenon in higher education all over the world. But how did achieve this status? To address question, we bring historical-sociological perspective and conceptualize as history. We focus on United States identify emergence of specific understanding organizational performance postwar decades. argue that advent constituted discursive shift, which was made possible—most notably but not solely—by rise functionalism to status dominant intellectual paradigm. The shift crystallized graduate departments, were commissioned by National Science Foundation produced American Council Education (ACE) 1966 1970. Throughout 1970s, social scientists became increasingly more interested methods merits ranking institutions, they would explicitly refer ACE rankings. This accompanied growing recognition, already had place purpose system —a trend has continued into present day.
